Russell Edward Brand (June 4, 1975) is an English actor, radio host, comedian, activist, and author. He is from Grays, Essex. His early age was spent during illness, drugs, and living with relatives due to the cancer diagnosis of his mother. The brand made his theatrical debut when he was 15, in Bugsy Malone’s school production. He also worked as an extra in films.
The brand began his stand-up career by performing at the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year final (2000). In the same year, he made his debut in Edinburgh as one-third of the stand-up show named Pablo Diablo's Cryptic Triptych. The brand took his one-man show, the confessional Better Now, straight to the Edinburgh Festival and returned with Eroticised Humour.
“Shame” was the first nationwide tour that was released in 2006. Some of the other stand-up DVDs by Brand are Live (20 November 2006), Doing Life – Live (26 November 2007), Scandalous – Live At The O2 (9 November 2009), Live in New York City (21 November 2011), and Messiah Complex (25 November 2013). He also appeared in several TV shows such as The Bill, White Teeth, Cruise of the Gods, Big Brother's Big Mouth, Russell Brand's Got Issues, Cold Blood, Big Time Rush, Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery, and many more.
The brand was host to 2012 MTV Movie Awards, 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Russell Brand's Ponderland, and 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. His drug addiction got him arrested on 12 occasions and was also ejected from the Gilded Balloon (Edinburgh). He has abstained from using drugs since December 2002. Brand is also a patron of the Focus 12 drug-treatment program.
Russell Edward Brand has won many awards for his stand-ups including British Comedy Awards 2006 for Best Newcomer, Time Out 2006 for Best Stand-Up, 33rd Annual Television and Radio Awards 2007 for Best Television Performer in a Non-Acting Role, Variety's Power of Comedy Award 2010, and GQ Men of the Year Awards 2013.
