Royal Hanneford Circus Information
The Royal Hanneford Circus is a traveling family show originating in the United States. It is said to be the world's oldest circus, with roots that go back to 1690. In 1807, the family made their performing debut as a touring troupe. Initially performing throughout the British Isles and Continental Europe, the family's 1903 "Hanneford Royal Canadian Circus" became its traveling show. The family members performed independently during most of the early twentieth century in America.
Tommy Hanneford started putting on shows with the Hanneford family in 1965, which eventually evolved into the current Royal Hanneford Circus. In September 1966, the family staged their inaugural big show in Saginaw, Michigan. George Jr., Tommy's brother, was a bareback rider. The "Royal Hanneford Circus" will make its debut with this performance.
Former Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus general manager Art Concello joined Tommy and producer Bill English in 1969. Tommy had previously worked with English in 1968. Until their 1974 split, the three men ran Circus Classics, Inc. Tommy shuffled the Royal Hanneford Circus booths in 1975. The Circus Hall of Fame inducted George Sr. Hanneford in 1977, Catherine in 1990, and Tommy posthumously in 2008 after he passed away in 2005. In 2015, Struppi, Tommy's wife, was honored with an induction into the Circus Hall of Fame.
