Rissi Palmer Information
Rissi Palmer grew up in the Pittsburgh suburb of Sewickley until she was 12, when she and her family relocated to the St. Louis suburb of Eureka, Missouri. Her family has deep Georgia roots. Palmer had said her father admired performers like Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Chaka Khan, and Santana, while Palmer's mother "was a huge Patsy Cline fan" before she passed away when Palmer was seven.
Palmer stated that her desire to be a singer dates back to childhood. As a kid, she participated in a Team 11-style Mickey Mouse Club for local television. When she was only sixteen, she performed country music at the Arkansas State Fair.
She signed to Flyte Tyme Records, run by R&B producers James "Jimmy Jam" Harris III and Terry Lewis when she was 19. Palmer declined the offer because she felt they were trying to change her "twangy" country sound into a "pop/soul hybrid." Palmer then unsuccessfully spent the next seven years attempting to secure a recording contract in Nashville by singing jingles for Barbie commercials, recording music for the TV show Dance Fever, and competing on Star Search.
Waiting in the Wings: African-Americans in Country Music, a documentary released in 2004, featured Rissi and many other African-American singers who had made significant contributions to country music but had yet to achieve mainstream recognition. It was on CMT on February 27, 2004, when the documentary was first broadcast.
