Rina Sawayama Information
Rina Sawayama (August 16, 1990) is a Japanese-born British singer, model, and songwriter from Niigata, Japan. Her music is classified as rock, pop, alternative metal, R&B, electropop, and alternative pop. She was five when her family decided to move to London. Rina attended Magdalene College, University of Cambridge, and studied politics, psychology, and sociology. Later on, she decided to pursue music and modeling as her career. At university, Rina was a part of a hip-hop group called Lazy Lion with Theo Ellis.
Rina Sawayama started her official career in 2013 when she released the single entitled “Sleeping in Waking.” It was followed by a music video to her track “Tunnel Vision” in June 2015 that Arvida Byström directed. “Where U Are” was another one by Rina, followed by “Cyber Stockholm Syndrome,” released in March 2017. The latter was premiered on The Fader. Some of her other hit singles include “Valentine (What’s It Gonna Be),” “Flicker,” “Comme des Garçons (Like the Boys),” and “Chosen Family.”
Sawayama only released one studio album so far, entitled Sawayama, on April 17, 2020. Rina is the only extended play by her that came out in 2017. She shares her main influences: Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue, JoJo, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, and Limp Bizkit. Sawayama was ranked in Dazed’s 100 lists and The Guardian’s 18 for ’18 list in 2017.
As a model, Rina Sawayama has been signed to Elite Model Management and Anti Agency. She was also selected for Versus x Versace’s fall-winter campaign in 2017.
