The seven-piece instrumental band Purple Funk Metropolis has a raw sound influenced by soul, jazz, funk, and more. Andrew Tomten (bandleader and saxophone), Alex Browne (trumpet), Sam Rosenstone (keyboards), Tarek Abdelqader (drums), and Andy Schupp (bass) all met in jazz seminars at the University of Minnesota. This band had many incarnations before they finally settled on the moniker Purple Funk Metropolis in 2017. At that point, they recorded their debut EP, Morsels, with the help of new member Alex Graves (guitar).
Since then, the band has been relentlessly doing shows, making records, and practicing, all of which have contributed to the steady development of their distinctive sound. When guitarist Evan Slack joined the band in 2019, the live performance intensity increased, and new and old songs were arranged with greater density. PFM is infamous for getting the entire room dancing, whether it be in a Como basement or a downtown dirt pub.
