Prague Symphony Orchestra Information
The Prague Symphony Orchestra is a Czech orchestra based in Prague, which was founded in 1934. It is traditionally known by the acronym 'FOK,' which stands for 'Film-Opera-Koncert.’ This reflects the orchestra's fields of activity as envisioned by its founder, Rudolf Pekárek. During the 1930s, the orchestra performed the scores for many Czech films and appeared regularly on Czech radio.
Václav Smetácek was an early promoter of the orchestra, who became the orchestra's lead conductor in 1942. He held this position for the next 30 years. From 2006 to 2013, the lead conductor was Jirí Kout. In the 2013–2014 season, Muhai Tang served as principal conductor, and Jac van Steen became the orchestra's principal guest conductor.
The Prague Symphony Orchestra has been part of several crossover projects since 1995, intending to mix metal and classical music. The most notable crossover projects were The Lingua Mortis album by Rage in 1996, The Lemuria and Sirius B albums by Therion in 2004, The Gettysburg trilogy on The Glorious Burden album in 2004 by Iced Earth, and The Keepers Trilogy on the Unarmed album in 2010 by Helloween.
Some of the notable lead conductors of The Prague Symphony Orchestra are Petr Altrichter (1990–1992), Martin Turnovský (1992–1995), Gaetano Delogu (1995–1998), Serge Baudo (2001–2006), Muhai Tang (2013-2014), and Pietari Inkinen (2015–present).
