Portland Cello Project Information
Since October 2006, the cellists of the Portland Cello Project have been putting on concerts together. For nearly a full year, the ensemble alternately went by "Celli" and "Cellodarity" until settling on "The Portland Cello Project."
On August 16, 2006, Tony Rogers had the first rehearsal for his band at the Musicians Union in Portland, Oregon. Tony Rogers, Gideon Freudmann, Zoe Keating, Douglas Jenkins, and Jenette Mackie were all present for the dress rehearsal. Justin Kagan, Todd Bayles, Skip von Kuske, Adam Hurst, and Noah Seitz were among those who were invited to the initial rehearsal. The band's debut performance was on October 15, 2006, at Portland, Oregon's The Doug Fir Lounge.
Cellists Tony Rogers and Douglas Jenkins shared administration and creative directing duties until Rogers moved to West Virginia in the middle of 2007. Rogers's last concert with the band occurred on July 1, 2007, at The Doug Fir Lounge. At this show, the band stunned Rogers by singing "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver with guest vocals from Holcombe Waller. The quartet became Kill Rock Stars' first and only cello ensemble when they signed a one-album deal with the label in 2009.
