Pinchas Zukerman Information
Pinchas Zukerman (July 16, 1948) is an Israeli-American conductor, violist, and violinist. He was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. At four, he began his musical studies on the recorder. His father taught him the clarinet, and Zukerman self-learned the violin at eight years old. He took early music education at the Samuel Rubin Academy of Music. Pablo Casals and Isaac Stern visited Israel in 1962 and learned about Zukerman’s violin talent. He then moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School in 1962.
Zukerman made his New York City debut in 1963 under Ivan Galamian and Stern. He received the Leventritt Prize with violinist Kyung-Wha Chung in 1967. He began his conducting career in 1970 with the English Chamber Orchestra. Zukerman served as director of London’s South Bank Festival of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra from 1980 to 1987. Later, he directed the summer festivals of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra from 1991 to 1995.
Zukerman became the Music Director of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO) in Ottawa. Since 2009, he has worked as Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music. His former students include Guy Braunstein, Julian Rachlin, and Kob Gabriel Kameda.
Zukerman founded the National Arts Centre Young Artists Programme in 1999. It counted young musicians, including Antal Szalai, Jessica Linnebach, and Viviane Hagner, as alumni. So far, Zukerman’s recordings have received more than 21 nominations in Grammy Awards, while he’s won two.
