Young musicians in the Delaware Valley can benefit from the Philadelphia Sinfonia Association's high-quality educational ensemble opportunities. In 1997, a group of young Philadelphia musicians formed Philadelphia Sinfonia, officially becoming a nonprofit orchestra. When Gary D. White, the current music director, was hired in 1999, the board underwent significant changes the following year, and the organization stabilized and expanded.
Since then, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church has served as the organization's rehearsal and office space. The board has undergone gradual and deliberate transitions, and staff members, beginning with an orchestra manager in 2004 and progressing through an administrative assistant in 2007, an executive director in 2011, and a program associate in 2022, have all been hired. Since its start, Philadelphia Sinfonia has maintained two orchestras: an advanced full symphony orchestra and a string chamber orchestra. In the autumn of 2012, an intermediate orchestra was added to the roster, and in the fall of 2022, Philadelphia Sinfonia Strings was added.
