As a musician and singer-songwriter from Chile, Pascuala Illabaca is well-known for her innovative blend of pop, jazz, and Chilean folk music, with the accordion as a central component of her characteristic sound.
Ilabaca was born into a musical family in the Valparaiso area, and she and her siblings and parents began performing together at a young age. She picked up the accordion when she was young and became interested in Chilean traditional music. As a young lady, Ilabaca attended classes at the Catholic University of Valparaiso to hone her musical chops; at the turn of the millennium, she performed professionally as a member of the band Los Pinguos del Puerto.
Her solo career began in the middle of the 2000s, and she released her first album, Pascuala canta a Violeta, in 2006. The record became an instant hit, and Ilabaca was quickly recognized as a promising new talent in Chile's music industry.
In the following years, the singer-songwriter put out a series of albums that fused jazz by Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk with Latin music forms like huayno and cumbia, all to widespread acclaim.
