Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir Information
Oakland, California, is the home of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir (OIGC). It began in 1986 as a spinoff of a gospel music workshop and evolved into its entity by 1991. Since then, the Choir has performed worldwide, released several albums, and even made it onto the silver screen and small screen. OIGC's repertoire spans many musical styles, and the Choir has worked with gospel, jazz, and hip-hop musicians.
The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir began in 1986 due to Terrance Kelly's gospel music workshop at Living Jazz's Jazz Camp West. Since its formation in 1991, it has operated independently as a charitable group. Since then, the Choir's harmonies and gospel repertoire have led to collaborations with several artists, including the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, and Joshua Nelson, the Prince of Kosher Gospel. The Choir has guest starred on albums by Linda Ronstadt, MC Hammer, Tramaine Hawkins, and others.
The OIGC also sponsors a youth choir. They formed in 1997 and have since played at various venues and events. The Choir gives young people in the Bay Area a chance to learn music, expand their horizons academically, make new friends, and perhaps win scholarships and receive mentorship. The OIGC Community Choir is the newest member of the OIGC family, founded in 2013. Within two years, this Choir went from zero to seventy singers. Despite not being an auditioned choir, OICC has an impressive roster of talented and dedicated singers. There are monthly rehearsals and numerous performances yearly, including a gospel festival in the summer.
