Oakland Ballet Information
The Oakland Ballet Group, situated in Oakland, California, is a non-profit ballet company. OBC was formed in 1965 by Ronn Guidi, an Oakland native, and has since achieved international acclaim for its historical reconstructions of ballets from Serge Diaghilev's famed Ballets Russes, the mounting of great Americana works, and the production of inventive contemporary choreography. Guidi formed Oakland Ballet Company based on principles that influenced the famed Ballets Russes dance company. The Ballets Russes, founded in Paris in the early twentieth century by impresario Sergei Diaghilev, went on to reinvent the art of ballet.
Guidi spent many years studying under Raoul Pausé, a former pupil of Ballets Russes dancer and choreographer Adolf Bolm, and therefore inherited the Ballets Russes heritage of mixing classical training with unrestricted artistic options. Oakland Ballet began a new era in 2000 with the appointment of Karen Brown, a noted Dance Theatre of Harlem dancer.
Oakland Ballet has revived works by renowned choreographers Kurt Jooss, Michel Fokine, Charles Weidman, Antony Tudor, and the first American re-stagings of Bronislava Nijinska's works. Oakland Ballet has performed Eugene Loring's "Billy the Kid," Ruthanna Boris's "Cakewalk," and Agnes de Mille's "Fall River Legend," among other American masterpieces.
