Northwestern Wildcats Womens Volleyball Information
The Northwestern Wildcats are the sporting teams representing Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Northwestern has belonged to the Big Ten Conference since its first year. It is one of two private colleges; the other is the University of Southern California. Northwestern markets itself as "Chicago's Big Ten Team. " It has eight men's and eleven women's NCAA Division I sports programs. Willie the Wildcat serves as the mascot.
Under coach Mary Conway, Northwestern staged their inaugural volleyball game in 1976. The Wildcats dropped to Tennessee in five sets during their inaugural NCAA Tournament in 1982. Following a five-set victory against Purdue, the squad earned its first Big Ten title and made yet another NCAA Tournament. Madelyn Menegetti and Patty Walsh were two Wildcats from the team's 1980s runs to the tournament selected for the Big Ten All-Decade squad.
On July 10, 2023, Fitzgerald was let go from head coach. David Braun, initially hired as Northwestern's defensive coordinator in January 2023, succeeded him first as interim head coach in July 2023. After breaking a 14-game road game losing run against Wisconsin, Braun was formally named head coach on November 15, 2023. Braun arrived from North Dakota State University, leading the Bison to two FCS National Championships while filling in the same role for four seasons.
