On May 11-13, 2018, with the support of the Province's Tourism Events Program, Prince George played host to Northern FanCon 2018, a globally renowned entertainment expo and comic convention that drew Hollywood superstars, creative geniuses, and thousands of visitors. Cosplay competitions, live interviews with celebrities, and a pop culture expo are just some of the highlights of Northern FanCon, which also features comic and film artists.
The fourth annual FanCon is back in Prince George, bigger and better than ever. The media attention and social media buzz surrounding this yearly event are enormous, and not just in Canada. Northern FanCon is rapidly becoming a cultural phenomenon that draws in the tens of thousands. "This is fantastic news for Prince George's because it has a multiplier effect on the tourism industry and the local economy," said Lana Popham, the province's interim minister of tourism, arts, and culture.
One way our government encourages tourism and benefits those who work in the tourism business in British Columbia is by subsidizing interesting and unusual events like Northern FanCon. More than 50,000 fans have visited the Prince George expo in the previous four years, coming from as far away as New Zealand, Japan, and Texas to see their favorite performers up and personal. The famous Nichelle Nichols, well known for her role as Lt. Uhura on Star Trek, will be joining the likes of famed Australian actress Gigi Edgley and many others in this year's lineup.
