NHRA Drag Racing Winternationals Information
The NHRA Winternationals is the annual drag racing event conducted at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California, by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). Carol Cox became the first woman to race at an NHRA national event in 1962, thanks to Peggy Hart (wife of track owner "Pappy" Hart), Mickey Thompson, and other racers Shirley Shahan and Roberta Leighton.
Cox won the title in S/SA, becoming the first woman to win an NHRA national event. In a 1962 issue of National Dragster she was listed as a "crowd favorite" with a winning pass of 13.06 seconds at 107.65 mph (173.25 km/h). Still, it made no mention that it was a first for a woman, dismissively referring to her as a "'powder puff' handler." Some racers believe that winning a class is more difficult than winning an elimination race.
At the Winternationals in 1969, the NHRA debuted the new Top Fuel Funny Car (TF/FC) class; Clare Sanders would win Funny Car Eliminator (FCE), a teammate of "Jungle Jim" Liberman title, by taking Stock Eliminator. Her victory earned her a spot on the cover of National Dragster.
