New Power Generation Information
The New Power Generation (The NPG) was a former backing band from 1990 to 2013 for the musician Prince. In 2013, the group was replaced by 3rdeyegirl as his backing band. The music of The NPG is defined as rock, pop, funk, soul, hip hop, dance, psychedelic, and R&B. The NPG reunited as Prince's backing band for his final studio album in 2015, prior to his death. The album was Hit n Run Phase Two. Again in 2017, the group reunited for a US and European tour. The current lineup of the band consists of Morris Hayes, Tommy Barbarella, Damon Dickson, Levi Seacer, Jr., Tony M., Michael Bland, Kirk Johnson, and Sonny T.
On the opening track of 1988's Lovesexy by Prince, the phrase "Welcome to the New Power Generation" was mentioned. In 1990, New Power Generation was used for the first time as the band name in the film Graffiti Bridge while a song entitled "New Power Generation" was featured on the accompanying soundtrack album. The band debuted live in 1990, during the Nude Tour. It was on record on the album Diamonds and Pearls in 1991.
Some of the initial discographies by the New Power Generation are One Nite Alone... Live! 2002, C-Note 2003, and Planet Earth 2007. A few of the albums credited to The New Power Generation are Goldnigga, Exodus, and Newpower Soul. Singles credited to The New Power Generation, and Prince includes "Diamonds and Pearls," "Sexy MF"/"Strollin'," "My Name Is Prince" (remixes), "The Morning Papers," "Nothing Compares 2 U", and a few more.
