Negativland Information
Negativland is an American experimental music band that originated in the late 1970s in the San Francisco Bay Area by Lyons and Hosler. The group’s current lineup consists of Jon Leidecker, “Wobbly,” Peter Conheim, David Wills, The Weatherman, and Mark Hosler. The name “Negativland” and “Seeland Records” were taken from a German band. They are also associated with the Church of SubGenius, a parody religion.
Negativland released an eponymous debut in 1980. The term “culture jamming” was coined by them in 1984. Until the early 1990s, the band produced several recordings for an American independent record label, the “SST Records,” most notably “Escape from Noise,” “Helter Stupid,” and “U2”. Escape from Noise was a breakthrough sample that got wide attention for false claims that Negativland inspired mass murderer David Brom.
In 1991, the single released with the name “U2” was sued by the U2’s label Island Records, stating that they violated the trademark with the U2 typeface on the album cover and the song itself. Four years later, Negativland released a book with CD, named “Fair Use: The Story of the Letter U and the Numeral 2” about the U2 incident. A Negativland-SST lawsuit followed this lawsuit.
Later, Negativland produced an EP, “The ABCs of Anarchism,” in collaboration with UK anarchist band Chumbawamba, and contributed to “Creative Commons,” a non-profit organization. Their recent album “The World Will Decide,” released in 2020, features contributions from Allen, Joyce, and Lyons.
