NCAA Division III Football Championship Information
In 1973, the NCAA introduced a football championship for its Division III. Thirty-two teams have qualified for the first round of the Division III playoffs. Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Ohio, in 2021 and Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on the grounds of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 2022 have been selected as the sites for the Division III championship game, known as the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl or Stagg Bowl (named after Amos Alonzo Stagg).
Previously, the title game was played at Hawkins Stadium in Bradenton, Florida (1990–1992), Garrett-Harrison Stadium in Phenix City, Alabama (1973–1982, 1985–1989), and Galbreath Field at the College Football Hall of Fame when it was located in Kings Island, Ohio (2018–2019). (1983–1984). Mary Hardin-Baylor won the 2021 championship by beating North Central (IL).
The East Regional Championship Game, known as the Knute Rockne Bowl, and the West Regional Championship Game, known as the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, were established in 1969 by the NCAA as matchups for small college teams. In 1973, Phenix City, Alabama, and the NCAA chose the name "Stagg Bowl" to host the national championship game for college football's Division III.
