National Ballet of Canada Information
The National Ballet of Canada was established in 1951 in Toronto, Ontario, with Celia Franca as the company's first artistic director. Since 2022, Hope Muir has been the National Ballet's creative director. It is a well-known company of 70 dancers with its orchestra. The ballet is famous for its extensive repertory, which includes the performance of conventional full-length classics, the acceptance of modern work, the encouragement of the production of new ballets, and the development of Canadian dancers and choreographers.
In 1989, Reid Anderson was appointed to the position of artistic director. He guided the company through a challenging economic downturn by choreographing classical ballet pieces and commissioning contemporary works from choreographers across Canada and the world.
Anderson departed the company in 1995, citing government funding shortages as the reason, and choreographer James Kudelka became the new director the following year.
Former Principal Dancer Karen Kain assumed the role of Artistic Director in 2005. In 2009, a new mixed program called Innovation launched with works by Canadian choreographers Crystal Pite, Sabrina Matthews, and Peter Quanz.
The company debuted Alexei Ratmansky's adaptation of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet in 2011. Regarding dance in Canada, there is no rival to the National Ballet of Canada. Kain officially resigned from his position with the organization in June 2020. The announcement that Hope Muir will take over for Kain came the next month. Her tenure began on January 1, 2022.
