Nashville Ballet Information
Nashville Ballet is one of the largest professional ballet companies in Tennessee. It was founded in 1986, and since then, the company has presented a varied repertoire of classical ballet. It also presents contemporary works by some noted choreographers and original works by Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. Nashville Ballet serves nearly 60,000 adults and children annually, along with Nashville Ballet’s second company (NB2). This is done through performances and community engagement programming.
School of Nashville Ballet is famous for offering world-class instruction in ballet and other dance forms for dancers of all ages. The ballet company owns its building, The Martin Center for Nashville Ballet. It is a highly customized facility that serves as a home for many professional dancers, school students, administrative offices, and much more. The majority of the performances are held at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC), located in downtown Nashville, although some performances are held at The Martin Center for Nashville Ballet.
Nashville Ballet evolved after several successful productions by the Young Dancers’ Concert Group. It was a regional performance group consisting of 6 teenagers. The first artistic director, Dane LaFontsee, was hired by the company in 1986. The ballet company was given the name “Nashville Ballet” in 1987. It was previously known as Nashville City Ballet.
Nashville Ballet hosted its first Ballet Ball fundraiser in 1989. It was originally known as Masked Ball and was co-chaired by Clare Armistead along with Elizabeth Nichols. Paul Vasterling was hired as a company member in the same year.
