Mwenso and the Shakes are a one-of-a-kind group of international musicians who fuse jazz, funk, blues, and African music into "intense, prowling, exuberant" live shows (New York Times). Their music is "an explosion of thoughts and sounds," with an "infectious delight" pouring from it (NPR). They came from Sierra Leone, South Africa, Madagascar, London, France, Jamaica, Hawaii, and are presently located in Harlem, led by vocalist Michael Mwenso.
Michael Mwenso, a Sierra Leone native, began singing and playing the piano when he came to London as a child. While James Brown, the King of Soul, toured London, Mwenso built a friendship with him, and he frequently requested Mwenso to sing with him when he was on tour in Europe. Mwenso began playing the trombone as a student at the Sylvia Young Theatre School to improve his musicianship. He dropped out of school at 16 to form his ensembles and perform with local jazz groups in various venues, including Asia.
Throughout three evenings, Michael Mwenso and his multicultural crew of musicians and dancers would create and perform a new music-theater show inspired by their travels across the United States, exploring forms of spirituality and celebrating strength and endurance.
