To recognize excellence in music videos, MTV hosts an annual awards ceremony, the MTV Video Music Awards (or VMAs for short). MTV's annual Video Music Awards presentation, created to compete with the Grammys in the video category, has been dubbed the "Super Bowl for youth" due to its capacity to attract millions of teenagers and young adults. The VMA was already highly sought after by the year 2001.
Bella Hadid presented Lady Gaga with the inaugural (and only as of 2023) Tricon Award. Following her address, Gaga took to the stage to perform a medley of her songs, including "Stupid Love," "Chromatica II"/"911," and "Rain on Me," the latter of which she sang alongside Ariana Grande. Song of the Year and Best Collaboration were among the four honors Grande took home. Actor Chadwick Boseman, who passed away less than 48 hours before the ceremony, was honored with a special tribute throughout the show.
Music videos are typically relegated to off-peak graveyard hours to satisfy the minimal amount of music programming in the network's carriage agreements. MTV has been criticized for focusing mostly on reality series and dramas outside the VMAs. From 2021 to 2023, however, the show's ratings started to rise again.
