Mosconi Cup Information
Since 1994, teams from Europe and the United States have battled it out in a nine-ball pool competition called the Mosconi Cup. Similar to the Ryder Cup in golf and the Weber Cup in bowling, this competition, named after American pool champion Willie Mosconi, pits national teams against each other. The Mosconi Cup is an annual exhibition first held in 1994 by Sky Sports and Matchroom Sport to honor the memory of American pool champion Willie Mosconi, who passed away in 1993.
Six males and two women competed in the inaugural season, with Franziska Stark of Germany and Allison Fisher of England representing Team Europe and Jeanette Lee and Vivian Villarreal of the United States on Team USA. Not a single female participant showed up after the first competition, despite a 2021 plea from Kelly Fisher to the tournament's administrators. Ronnie O'Sullivan, Jimmy White, Alex Higgins, and Steve Davis were professional snooker players who played for Team Europe in the event's early years.
Since 2003, the Mosconi Cup has been held in a different country each year, with the United States hosting in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Europe hosting in England (for the first nine years of the tournament's existence). The Netherlands hosted the 2004 and 2006 Mosconi Cups, while Malta played host in 2008. England hosted two Mosconi Cups in a row, in 2020 and '21.
