Misty Copeland Information
Misty Danielle Copeland (September 10, 1982) is an American ballet dancer born in Kansas. She works for American Ballet Theatre (ABT), one of the US's three best traditional ballet companies. With her promotion to principal dancer on June 30, 2015, Copeland made history as the first African American woman in ABT's 75-year history to achieve this feat. Copeland did not begin ballet training until she was thirteen, but she was already a prodigy when she became famous.
Copeland was named Southern California's top dancer in 1997 by the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Award. After participating in two summer workshops with American Ballet Theater, she joined the company in 2000, moved on to the corps de ballet in 2001, and eventually became a soloist in 2007. During her solo career, which began in 2007 and ended in the middle of 2015, she was praised for her growth into a more modern and refined dancer.
Public speaking, celebrity spokesman, and stage performer are some of Copeland's other careers outside dancing. In addition to narrating the documentary A Ballerina's Tale, which details the obstacles she faced during her career, she has penned two autobiographical novels. Time magazine featured her on the cover of its 2015 issue after naming her one of the 100 most important people in the world. In 2021, Copeland was presented with the Spingarn Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the NAACP.
