Miriam Fried Information
Miriam Fried (September 9, 1946) is a Romanian-born Israeli pedagogue and classical violinist. She was born in Satu Mare, Romania. Her ancestors eventually made their way to Herzliya. Her mom used to teach piano. When Miriam was six, she started playing the piano, but by the time she was eight, she had already decided on the violin. After beginning her education in Tel Aviv with Alice Fenyves, she studied under Lorand Fenyves in Geneva, Josef Gingold at Indiana University, and Ivan Galamian at the Juilliard School.
She took first place in the Paganini Competition in Genoa in 1968 and the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels in 1971. Donald Erb's Violin Concerto is dedicated to and premiered by Miriam Fried. Ned Rorem and Alexander Boskovich are only a couple of the composers who have created pieces for her. She has made two recordings of the Sibelius Violin Concerto and a recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's solo sonatas and partitas.
It is widely thought that she plays a Stradivarius from 1718 that belonged to Louis Spohr and Regina Strinasacchi, for whom Mozart composed his Sonata in B-flat, K 454. Since 1993, she has held the position of Artistic Director and Chair of the Faculty at the Ravinia Festival's Steans Institute for Young Artists. She played the violin in the famous Mendelssohn Quartet.
