Minihorse Information
Minihorse is a mercurial fuzz-pop band from Michigan. They take laid-back melodic patterns and process them through loud, buzzy guitars. Their apparent influences include shoegaze and alternative rock from the '90s. Big Lack, the band's debut EP from 2015, presented their gritty yet mind-expanding musical vision; Living Room Art, their 2019 LP, saw them crank up the volume and expressive noise.
Musical members John Fossum (drums), Christian Anderson (bass), and Ben Collins (vocalist/songwriter/producer) met in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and founded Minihorse. All three had been around for a while in the thriving rock scene of Southeast Michigan; Collins had been a part of the indie pop sensation Lightning Love before he, Anderson, and Fossum formed the renowned psych-pop trio Starling Electric. Minihorse first appeared in 2015, touring across the region and recording a collection of Collins' songs at his Ypsilanti studio. Their first extended play (EP), Big Lack, was published the following year after they joined the California independent label Friendship Fever.
Collins collaborated on new music with Anderson and Fossum as he investigated ayahuasca therapy and worked on other electronics, mastering and producing projects during the following three years. He also roamed minder for the acclaimed artificial intelligence robot Sophia. Experimental musician Kelly Moran, composer and multi-instrumentalist Fred Thomas, and vocalist Anna Burch contributed to the albums. Living Room Art, Minihorse's debut full-length album released in 2019 via Park The Van Records, is the culmination of these sessions. Minihorse had gone from a trio to a quartet by the time the record came out, thanks to guitarist Francis Ma.
