Michael Ian Black (August 12, 1971) is an American director, writer, actor, and comedian. In Chicago, Illinois, he was born to store owner Jill and executive Robert Schwartz. His family is devoutly Jewish. He went to Hillsborough High School in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey, where he grew up. His parents split when he was three.
Black started his career as a member of the comedic ensemble The State, featured on MTV's show of the same name. He appeared on the show Viva Variety as "Johnny Bluejeans" and in the film Wet Hot American Summer, directed by longtime collaborator David Wain, with members of that ensemble.
Black has also appeared in several TV shows, and films, including VH1's I Love the... series, his comic ensemble Stella, and several TV shows and films. He also voiced a sock puppet for Pets.com, appeared in Sierra Mist ads, hosted the inaugural season of NBC's hidden-camera show Spy TV, appeared in many scenes in the film Big Helium Dog, and worked in a supporting role on the NBC drama Ed.
In 2018, Black launched a new podcast called Obscure with Michael Ian Black, in which he reads classic literature and provides remarks about it while doing so. In Season 1, he reads Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure. He reads Frankenstein by Mary Shelley in Season 2.
