McGuffey Lane Information
McGuffey Lane is an American country rock band. The current lineup of the group consists of Mike Nugen (vocals and lead guitar), John Schwab (lead vocals and lead guitar), Kevin Reed (vocals and harmonica), Randy Huff (vocals and drums), Molly Pauken (vocals, acoustic guitar, and mandolin), Steve Reis (vocals and bass), and Terry Efaw (electric guitar, gutstring guitar, and steel guitar). Scotch & Soda began as a duo in 1972 when Terry Efaw and Steve Reis began performing together.
Reis's street in Athens, Ohio, McGuffey Lane, became the band's moniker after the addition of Bobby E. McNelley as lyricist, lead singer, and guitarist. After growing to a sextet and gaining popularity in their home region, the band released their debut album on their own Paradise Island record company. Due to the album's success, which sold over 40k copies, the band was signed to Atco Records. In 1980, they reissued their debut album and went on tour with the Charlie Daniels Band, the Judds, and the Allman Brothers Band.
Aqua Dream's lead single, "Start It All Over," spent three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching no. 97 in February 1982. Their label intended to promote them as a pop-country act in the spirit of Alabama, despite the group's string of minor hits on the country charts. Unfortunately, when they were getting ready to release 1984's Day By Day, keyboardist Tebes Douglass was murdered in a vehicle accident, so their efforts to break into the country charts were cut short. Eventually, Bobby Gene McNelley decided to go alone as a songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee and quit the band.
