Maurice Benard Information
Maurice Benard's parents, Martha (a bank worker) and Humberto (a bakery superintendent), gave birth to him as Mauricio José Morales in Martinez, California. He is of Nicaraguan descent but spent his formative years in San Francisco, California. From 1987 through 1990, he starred in the daytime drama All My Children as Nico.
After that, he became a regular on the ABC daytime drama General Hospital. In the show, he played the part of Sonny Corinthos, a kingpin of the mob who suffers from bipolar disorder. His debut at General Hospital came on August 13th, 1993. Benard has won three Soap Opera Digest Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor (1996, 2003, and 2005) and has been nominated for multiple Daytime Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Sonny Corinthos.
Benard starred as a guest star on several shows and movies in the early 1990s, including the CBS TV film Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter (1991), in which he played the role of Desi Arnaz. His wife, Paula, served as an executive producer on the indie film where he starred, The Ghost and the Whale.
