In his fiery delivery and introspective lyrics, Matthew Logan Vasquez, co-founder and frontman of the chameleon-like heartland indie rock ensemble Delta Spirit draws inspiration from a wide range of artists, including Gram Parsons, Kurt Cobain, Neil Young, and Iggy Pop. On his self-recorded but vivacious sophomore album, Does What He Wants, he blends indie rock, electronic pop, R&B, and lyrical Americana, toying with melancholy but ultimately giving in to exhilaration (2017).
Vasquez moved to Austin, Texas, with his wife and infant kid shortly after the 2014 release of Into the Wide, Delta Spirit's fourth studio album, to begin work on what would become his debut solo effort. The resulting Austin EP was released in 2015, and his debut LP, Solicitor Returns, is scheduled for release in the early months of 2016. The EP is a blistering collection of outlaw psych rock, and Vasquez plays every instrument on it.
In January 2017, Vasquez released the peppy lead single "Same," which was taken from his sophomore solo effort, Does What He Wants. A copy of the album was made available to the public in April of that year. The next year, Vasquez released his extended play, Texas Murder Ballads. It's a taste of his third studio album, also recorded in Austin, and is distributed for free. The album Light'n Up was released in February 2019 on Dine Alone Records. Recording for it began in his Austin home before he moved to Oslo, Norway.
