Mark Morris Dance Group Information
The Mark Morris Dance Center is located in the Fort Greene district of Brooklyn, New York. It is the permanent home of the Mark Morris Dance Group, an international touring modern dance company. The Center, which has been open since 2001, also has rehearsal space for the dance community, outreach activities for local children and neighborhood residents, and a school that offers dance classes to students of all ages.
The Mark Morris Dance Group began a $7.4 million capital campaign in 1996 to create its first permanent headquarters in the United States. In 1999, the Company bought a dilapidated structure on the corner of Flatbush and Lafayette Avenues in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and began construction. Beyer Blinder Belle Architects and Planners designed the facility, which now has five stories, seven column-free studios with wood-sprung floors, extensive locker rooms with showers, a wellness center, a 140-seat performance area, and administrative offices for the Company.
