Mahler Chamber Orchestra Information

Claudio Abbado and other former members of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra created the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in 1997 as a professional traveling chamber orchestra. The MCO holds approximately 60–70 concerts and performances throughout the year. It features 45 musicians from 20 different countries. Concerts, opera ventures, chamber music, and CD recordings are among the organization's activities. The MCO's repertoire spans the centuries, from baroque to current. The MCO is a self-funded orchestra that receives no government funding. Friends and sponsors are required to keep the orchestra's artistic life afloat.

Collaboration with high-profile partners has been critical from the start in selecting soloists and conductors, as well as concert producers and locations, to maintain these high standards. Daniel Harding has been a pivotal element in the orchestra's development, alongside founder Claudio Abbado. Harding began as a principal guest conductor and rose through the ranks to become music director in 2003, Principal Conductor in 2008, and Conductor Laureate in 2011.

Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, which premiered at the Festival International d'Art Lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence in 1998 under the direction of Claudio Abbado and Daniel Harding, gave the orchestra its international breakthrough barely a year after its formation. The production's subsequent globe tour earned the ensemble widespread praise and a residency contract with the Aix-en-Provence festival.
