Madame Butterfly Information
Madama Butterfly consists of a three-act opera theatrical performances by Giacomo Puccini, based on the story of Madame Butterfly (1898) by John Luther Long. A story told to Long by his sister Jennie Correll based on the semi-autobiographical 1887 French novel Madame Chrysantheme written by Pierre Loti.
The opera’s original version was in two acts, and premiered on February 17, 1904, at the La Scala in Milan. The first performance failed to thrill the audience and got poor reviews. Yet it had renowned singers including soprano Rosina Storchio, baritone Giuseppe De Luca, and tenor Giovanni Zenatello in the leading roles.
Much of that poor performance was attributed to the late completion by Puccini, leading to little time left for rehearsals. Puccini later revised the opera and split the second act into two, with the Humming Chorus as the bridge to the now Act III alongside other changes. After these changes, the opera’s performances started getting impressive reviews and feedback.
