Lyric Opera Information
The Lyric Opera of Chicago is among the best in the American operatic landscape. When Maria Callas made her American debut in Norma at the Lyric Theatre of Chicago in 1954, it was formed by Carol Fox, Nicola Rescigno, and Lawrence Kelly. Fox re-established the company in 1956 under its current name, and even after she left in 1981, it has remained one of the leading opera organizations in the United States. In the Civic Opera Building, you'll find a theater and other performance venues known as The Lyric. The Lyric has taken possession of these areas.
On July 29, 1850, a traveling opera troupe brought Bellini's opera La sonnambula to Chicago. In 1865, Chicago opened its first opera theatre, but it was destroyed the following year during the Great Fire. In 1889, the Chicago Auditorium became the city's second opera house.
Although the Chicago Civic Opera Company disbanded during the Great Depression, the present Civic Opera House at 20 North Wacker Drive was opened that year. Before it finally shut down in 1941, the old Auditorium hosted numerous musicals and plays.
In 1910, the Chicago Grand Opera Company was founded from the ashes of the Manhattan Opera Company, which Oscar Hammerstein I had founded but had been forced out of business by the more successful Metropolitan Opera.
