Live Wire Radio Information
Live Wire, modeled after West Coast Live, was proposed to Robyn Tenenbaum by Kate Sokoloff in February 2003 as a younger, "hipper" alternative to Prairie Home Companion. Tenenbaum had previously helped produce rock concerts with Bill Graham Presents and NPR's West Coast Live in San Francisco for four years. As a theater producer, Sokoloff was active in his community.
In September 2003, the two ladies assembled a Live Wire prototype and pitched it to Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) via their newly formed production business, Moxiefish. The initial recording occurred in March 2004 at the Hollywood Theatre, with about 150 people in attendance. The premiere aired on OPB at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2004.
At the start, episodes were only made once a month. By 2005, the tapings were often hosted in Portland's Aladdin Theater, with an audience size of 350–500. In October 2005, a taping occurred at the Mission Theatre & Pub. For a summer performance in 2013, the Gerding Theatre within the First Regiment Armory Annex was utilized.
After four episodes, lead writer Courtenay Hameister replaced Sample as host due to scheduling conflicts. Hameister was a copywriter for an advertising agency, and she had previously worked on the production team for the MTV sketch comedy series The State.
