Led Kaapana Information
Ledward Kaapana (August 25, 1948) is a popular Hawaiian musician. He is an expert in playing the ukulele, autoharp, steel guitar, and bass guitar. His slack key guitar style is what made him most popular. Kaapana was born in a musical family. He spent his early childhood in the small black sand bay village of Kalapana. This village was nearly destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Kilauea in 1986. From an early age, he loved playing music.
As a baritone and falsetto vocalist, Kaapana released his first solo album in 1983 entitled Lima Wela ("Hot Hands"). The next year, this album successfully received the Na Hoku Hanohano (means "Honored Stars") Award for "Instrumental Album of the Year." His professional breakthrough came when he became part of the Hui 'Ohana ("Family Group").
Hui Ohana was a group of Kaapana's twin brother, Nedward Kaapana, and his cousin, Dennis Pavao. The group released fourteen albums in total, and all of them garnered commercial and critical success. Kaapana has also performed and recorded with Bob Brozman, an acoustic lap-steel player. He released a long list of albums on the Dancing Cat label (the 1990s onward).
Kaapana is one of the very few Hawaiian recording artists who earned the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. These mega awards are affiliated with the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts (HARA). He received this award for his major work as a member of three different recording entities, that is, as a member of Ledward Kaapana & I Kona as a solo artist and as a member of Hui 'Ohana. Kaapana received four Grammy Nominations in the Best Hawaiian Music Album category in 2010.
