La Sonora Poncena Information
Enrique "Quique" Lucca Caraballo established La Sonora Ponceña, a salsa group hailing from Puerto Rico, in 1954. "Conjunto Sonora Ponceña" was the name Quique gave the band when he re-established it in 1954, following a year of inactivity. In his youth, he had a pal named Antonio "Tato" Santaella, who played balón. The band's first official dance was on April 20 of that year. Vicentivo Morales became the first pianist to play with the group in 1956.
The Teatro La Perla in Ponce and the Tito Puente Amphitheater at the Centro de Bellas Artes in San Juan, Puerto Rico, were the venues for Sonora Ponceña's 45th anniversary celebration in 2000. In addition to their 45th-anniversary performance in Miami, they also appeared in Caracas, Venezuela. La Sonora Ponceña took part in numerous events all around Puerto Rico in the years after 2000.
Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami, Washington, Connecticut, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Jersey, Panamá, Perú, England, Switzerland, and Italy were among the future stops for the band's performances. At Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, the band performed in 2004 to commemorate its 50th anniversary. The presentation day of the exhibition, February 21, was a sellout with 12,000 spectators. The program was shown on both television and radio.
