Kwanzaa Celebration Information
Kwanzaa is an annual celebration that is associated with African-American culture. The celebration takes place from December 26 thru January 1. It culminates in a communal feast, usually held on the 6th day, known as Karamu. Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, who based the event on African harvest festival traditions taken from various parts of Africa. This includes West and Southeast Africa mostly. Kwanzaa was celebrated for the first time in 1996. It is all about celebrating unity, creativity, faith, and giving gifts.
Kwanzaa is a specifically African-American holiday that is based upon the idea of giving people an alternative to the existing holiday. The celebration is taken as an opportunity to celebrate their history and culture. The celebration’s name is derived from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” translated to “first fruits.” In Southern Africa, the first fruit festivals are celebrated in December and January with the southern solstice. During the early years, Kwanzaa as an alternative to Christmas.
According to its founder, Kwanzaa celebrates the seven principles of Nguzo Saba that is originally Nguzu Saba (the seven principles of African Heritage). The principals were developed in 1965; they comprise Kawaida, a Swahili, “common.” Each of the seven days celebrations of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one principle that is Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Umoja (Unity), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).
Families celebrate Kwanzaa by decorating their households with colorful African cloth such as kente and other art objects. Women often wear Kaftans, and fresh fruit is used to represent African idealism.
