Ketanji Onyika Brown Jackson (September 14, 1970) is an American lawyer and jurist serving as an associate judge on the United States Supreme Court. President Joe Biden nominated Jackson to the Supreme Court on February 25, 2022; the U.S. Senate approved her nomination, and she was inaugurated the same year. She is the first black woman and former federal public defender serving on the Supreme Court.
President Biden said on March 30, 2021, that he nominated Jackson as an American circuit judge for the District of Columbia Circuit. Her nomination arrived before the Senate on April 19, 2021. Biden selected Jackson to the post left open by Judge Merrick Garland, who had retired to serve as U.S. Attorney General.
Her nomination underwent a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 28, 2021. During her confirmation hearing, Jackson was questioned over numerous of her decisions against the Trump government. Jackson was appointed the circuit judge for the First Circuit on September 28, 2022. Her appointment as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court preceded her ending of service as a circuit judge on June 29, 2022.
