Kent Monkman Information
Kent Monkman (November 13, 1965) is a Canadian First Nations artist of Cree ancestry. He was born in St. Mary's, Ontario, for his work on behalf of advancing questions of sexual identification. The Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto presented Monkman with the Bonham Centre Award in 2017. The importance of Canada's 150th anniversary and his desire to bring attention to his efforts led him to accept the honorary post of grand marshal for Toronto's Pride parade the same year.
Monkman's "Shame and Prejudice: A Story of Resilience" was commissioned by Barbara Fischer, curator of the University of Toronto Art Museum, to "set up a provocative friction between Canadian national myths, aboriginal experience, and traditional European art practices." The exhibit explored the Indigenous experience and the significance of Canada's 150th anniversary for Indigenous communities.
The Metropolitan commissioned two paintings from Monkman in 2019 for its Great Hall named "mistikôsiwak (Wooden Boat People)." The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Metropolitan) purchased the diptych Welcoming the Newcomers (2019) and Resurgence of the People (2019) in 2020, and the book Revision and Resistance: mistikôsiwak was released in the same year. Both Monkman and Miss Chief have come out as two-spirit.
