Kalpen Suresh Modi, known by his stage name Kal Penn, was born on April 23, 1977, and he has worked as an actor, author, academic lecturer, and White House staffer for the Obama government. On House, he played Dr. Lawrence Kutner; in Designated Survivor, he played White House staffer Seth Wright; and in the Harold & Kumar picture series, he played Dr. Kumar Patel. He also received praise for his role in The Namesake. Penn is a well-known figure in film studies, having served as a visiting professor at Penn's Cinema Studies Program.
Penn became the Senior Associate Editor in the White House Office of Public Engagement in 2009. Because of this, Lawrence Kutner's character on the show House had to be eliminated. Penn took a short leave of absence in June 2010 to shoot A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, the third film in the Harold & Kumar franchise and then returned to his position at the White House after filming wrapped. He had previously departed the White House in July 2011 for a role in How I Met Your Mother.
He portrayed Seth Wright on the political drama series Designated Survivor from 2016 to 2019 and was also a consultant for the show. Superhuman's game show presenter was him, too. In the 2019 season of the NBC comedy series Sunnyside, Penn played the role of Garrett Modi. The following year, he hosted a program on Freeform titled Kal Penn Approves This Message, in which he discussed politics.
