Kakani Katija Information
Hawaii's own Kakani Katija is an expert in bioengineering. Katija began researching how marine animals swim and eat while in graduate school for aeronautics and bioengineering. The University of Washington is where Kakani Katija earned her bachelor's degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2004. She obtained a Master of Science in Aeronautics from CalTech in 2005 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioengineering from Caltech in 2010.
Katija received graduate research scholarships from the National Science Foundation and the American Society for Engineering Education. She has done fieldwork worldwide as a qualified research diver, including a 2009 study off the coast of the Palau archipelago. The researchers wanted to figure out the mechanics behind how the jellyfish moved. They found instead that the jellyfish not only drag an almost continual flume of water behind them but also force water into their bells.
This realization prompted Katija to investigate the role of marine life in oceanic mixing. Inspired by her find, Katija is now investigating whether marine organisms contribute to fluid mixing in the ocean at rates comparable to winds and tides. In 2011, the National Geographic Society recognized her as an Emerging Explorer, and in 2012, they recorded her conducting research underwater in Panama as part of the award.
