Kadim Al-Sahir Information
Kadim Jabbar Al Samarai (September 12, 1957) is an Iraqi singer and composer. He is professionally known by his stage name, Kadim Al Sahir. He was born in Mosul, Iraq. Soon after the end of the Gulf War in the early 1990s, Al Sahir fled Iraq. A nomad who spent much of his time in Cairo, Dubai, Beirut, and Paris, he finally put down roots in Rabat, Morocco, with his family in 2022. Wisam Al Sahir and Omar Al Sahir are his two sons; both are married. Sana, Wisam's granddaughter, also counts Kadim as a grandfather.
Later, he relocated to Lebanon, where he collaborated with Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani on several songs. Qabbani, who ultimately made his home in Cairo, supplied the lyrics to several of his songs. Qabbani, who had previously written lyrics for the 1960s and 1970s superstars like Abdel Halim Hafez and Najat Al Saghira, penned the words to over 30 of Al Sahir's songs. Al Sahir sang political and love songs for Iraq and Baghdad, reflecting the feelings and sufferings of the Iraqi people, in addition to reciting poems by Qabbani.
In 1998, he had already released ten albums and was hailed as an artist and a pop star. That status propelled him to a wider audience and a growing worldwide reputation, culminating in a UNICEF award for his song "Tathakkar," which he played in the United States for Congress and the United Nations in one of the first genuine post-Gulf War cultural exchanges. The next year, he collaborated with the Italian Symphony Orchestra to record a homage to the Pope.
