Julie Fowlis Information
Julie Fowlis (June 20, 1979) is a Scottish multi-instrumentalist and folk singer born in North Uist, Outer Hebrides. Fowlis's musical interests began at a young age, and she has continued to pursue them as an adult. Her first professional gig was with the Scottish sextet Dchas, where she performed alongside Jenna Reid, a Shetland fiddler. Four of the band's members met while attending the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and Fowlis did so while attending the adjacent University of Strathclyde.
Fowlis continued her solo career in 2005 while simultaneously releasing Dchas's second album, An Darna Umhail. Her debut solo album, Mar a Tha Mo Chridhe (As My Heart Is), came out the same year. Iain MacDonald and Fowlis co-produced the record, which catapulted her to international fame. On seven of the songs, Fowlis's future spouse, Éamonn Doorley, can be heard playing the bouzouki.
In March of 2007, she published her second solo album titled Cuilidh, which quickly became a best-seller on Traditional and World Music charts around the world. The songs on her album are all traditional fare from her home region of North Uist. Doorley again contributed bouzouki playing to the whole album and collaborated with Fowlis on production. Fowlis has been honored with multiple BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including the Horizon Award in 2006, Folk Singer of the Year in 2008, and a nomination in 2007.
