Judy Collins Information
Judith Marjorie Collins (May 1, 1939) is an American singer-songwriter and musician who has been making music for 70 years. She is notable for her clear voice, social activism, eclectic taste in music (including folk, country, show tunes, pop, rock & roll, and standards), and Grammy Award-winning status as a recording artist.
She is also a documentary filmmaker nominated for an Oscar. Her discography includes 36 studio albums, nine live albums, several compilation albums, four holiday albums, and 21 singles.
Traditional folk tunes made up Collins' 1961 debut studio album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow. The Joni Mitchell-written "Both Sides, Now" from her fifth studio album In My Life (1966) led to her international fame with "Hard Lovin' Loser" (No. 97). This was Collins's first Grammy, and the song went on to peak at No. 8 on the pop singles list.
The National Recording Registry was established in 2017 by the Library of Congress to preserve Judy Collins's performances of "Amazing Grace" because of their "culturally, historically, or artistically significant" nature. The same year, her album Silver Skies Blue with Ari Hest was nominated for Best Folk Album at the Grammys.
With her duet album Winter Stories featuring Chatham County Line and Norwegian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jonas Fjeld, she achieved her first No. 1 album on an American Billboard Chart in 2019, at 80. Spellbound, her debut studio album consisting entirely of original compositions, was released in 2022 and garnered another Best Folk Album Grammy nomination.
