John Holiday Information
John Thomas Holiday Jr., an American opera countertenor, was born on March 31, 1985. His repertoire is mostly composed of operas that have been produced or performed live, operas for voice and orchestra, and experimental mixed-media compositions by Baroque and contemporary composers. He has participated in several world premieres. He has performed with numerous American opera groups, toured with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and performed in Shanghai and other European cities. He sang jazz and gospel songs and participated in season 19 of NBC's The Voice, a singing competition show.
From 2003 to 2007, he attended Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he majored in vocal performance and graduated in 2007. He won first place multiple times in the TEXOMA region of the National Association of Teachers of Singing as a student at SMU. Although there weren't many possibilities for a countertenor to perform at SMU, he did sing the part of Gherardino in the school's production of Gianni Schicchi in 2005. In 2007, he took first place in the concerto competition at SMU's Meadows School of the Arts.
Holiday made his Carnegie Hall debut in October 2012 when he performed Bernstein's Chichester Psalms with the Atlanta Symphony and Robert Spano. He made his Portland Opera debut in 2012, performing the First Oracle and First Cardinal in Kevin Newbury's production of Philip Glass' Galileo Galilei under the artistic supervision of Maestra Anne Manson. He reprised the roles in 2013 for his Cincinnati Opera debut.
