Jens Lekman Information
Jens Martin Lekman (February 6, 1981) is a Swedish musician. He was born in Angered, Gothenburg. His childhood lack of musical interest was overridden by an invitation to play bass in a friend's cover band when he was fourteen. This inspired him to start composing songs, and he soon had hundreds under his belt. He eventually started going by the alias Rocky Dennis, taken from the main character in the film Mask.
During 2000–2003, Lekman recorded and distributed the bulk of his discography privately on CDR. Due to the influence of the film Mask, which inspired one of Lekman's songs at the time to be named "Rocky Dennis' Farewell Song to the Blind Girl," the name "Rocky Dennis" was often used to refer to him. Lekman issued Maple Leaves, a 7" vinyl EP, independently in 2003. By the time the CD version of the same EP was published later that year by Swedish indie label Service Records, his fame had spread.
First published in 2004, the songs on When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog were recorded between 2000 and 2004. Both European and American alternative music publications covered the record favorably. In 2005, Swedish national television aired a concert film filmed at Lekman's sold-out show with José González at Göteborg Concert Hall in December 2003.
