Jean Kilbourne, beginning in the late 1960s, initiated a movement to promote media literacy to prevent violence against women, eating disorders, and addiction by examining the connection between advertising and these public health issues. This strategy, which was novel and unconventional when first proposed, is now often used and forms the backbone of many preventative measures.
About half of the universities in the United States have hosted Kilbourne for a speaking engagement. She is regularly a featured speaker at conferences on topics as diverse as addiction and public health, violence against women, and media literacy. Jean Kilbourne has been a member of the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism since 1993 when she was nominated there by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.
She has been the subject of hundreds of television and radio shows, including The Today Show, All Things Considered, 20/20, and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Prestigious publications, including Time, Newsweek, and The New York Times, interviewed her. Kilbourne received an honorary doctorate from Westfield State College in 2005, the same year a Canadian all-female rock band named themselves after her.
