Ivo Pogorelich Information
Ivo Pogorelic (October 20, 1958) is a Yugoslav-born Croatian pianist. He was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. In 1978, Pogoreli won the Casagrande Competition in Terni, Italy, and in 1980, he took first place at the Montreal International Musical Competition. As a result of his early elimination from the X International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1980, "genius" labeled juror Martha Argerich resigned in protest.
Argerich, a pianist of worldwide fame, caused a tremendous uproar by making these allegations. Two other jury members agreed with her and said it was "unthinkable that such an artist should not make it to the finals" so she could make her decision. The opinions of the other judges were heard, and they were not favorable to Pogoreli's peculiar behavior. A jury member, Eugene List, said, "He doesn't appreciate the music. He frequently overstates his case.
And he plays the part too well." If people like Pogoreli make it to the second stage, I cannot participate in the jury job," Louis Kentner said before he resigned from the jury after seeing his students dismissed in the first round.
