The most important competition in synchronized skating is the annual World Championships, held in the spring. The International Skating Union, which is among the world's most venerable sports governing bodies, recognizes the competitions.
Men's and women's singles, ice dance, and pairs skaters compete for medals at the World Synchronized Skaters Championships. The first-ever World Championships were hosted in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 1896, four years after the International Skating Union was established. German figure dancer Gilbert Fuchs was the first to claim the title. Madge Syers, a figure skater from Britain, won the first-ever gold at the Winter Olympics in 1902.
For the first time, the championships were hosted in a location other than Europe in 1930, when New York City played host. Skaters must be at least the required age and have a certain minimal technical score, in addition to being selected by their country's ISU federation. At times, fresh faces in a field need to show their mettle by advancing through a series of elimination rounds.
